Players go low at Whisper Creek

The field storms through Whisper Creek and posts low numbers in all flights on Sunday.  The weather was hot and humid but only a light wind which usually protects the course from low scores.  Whisper Creek was in great shape but the greens were a little slow due to the humid weather.

One player really went low shooting one under par in the Palmer Flight; Chuck Malik.  Other notables who shot low numbers were Raj Jayaraman, Frank Kaldis, Randy Simonson and Thomas Martinez.  Whisper Creek was no match for this group of winner’s.

CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT:
Once again Dane Yarnell and Mark Palmer found themselves tied after 18 holes.  Four players competed in the Championship flight and all post good rounds in the 70’s.  When the pair came in, they both had posted a final round of 73.  The course was packed and fortunately we were able to head out to the 18th Tee to play sudden death.  Both hit good shots in the middle of the fairway.  Mark hit a lay-up on the par five but found some issues which impeded his backswing.  Dane decided to gamble and go for the green finding the front bunker but clearing the water.  Mark posted a 6 leaving Dane two putts for the win.  It made Mark feel a whole lot better when Dane sunk the 20 foot putt for Birdie.

PALMER FLIGHT:
Chuck Malik posted the low round of the day with a one under par 71.  Everyone else was playing for second because Chuck took charge of the tournament posting a 36 on the front and a 35 on the back nine.  Mike Anderson posted a good round of 77 but not good enough to catch the hot hand of Chuck Malik.

HOGAN FLIGHT:
Raj Jayaraman was the hot Hogan player of 2009 and graduated in the Palmer Flight for 2010.  Raj returned to the Hogan Flight after struggling to compete at the new yardage and has been putting up good numbers in his last few tournaments.  It appears that Raj is heading back to the Palmer Flight because he is trending to under 8.0 and will once again compete against a tough field.  Kelly Muzzy of the Milwaukee Tour posted a good round shooting 81 to take 2nd place.

SARAZEN FLIGHT:
In 2010 Frank Kaldis had to wait until the Chicago Championship to post his only win on tour in his first season.  Not the case for 2011; now he is the one everyone is hoping will graduate to the Hogan Flight.  Frank played in the South Tour the day before and his 79 makes back to back tournament rounds in the 70’s.  Nick Lanas gave good chase but fell three strokes back to finish second.

JONES FLIGHT:
Randy Simonson has now replaced Gene Kramer as the one to beat in the Jones Flight.  Randy shot a great round of 85 to win by one stroke over Eddie Stephens who took a large number on a hole knocking him out of first place.  John Carrato and James Francey had a one stroke lead over Eddie Stephens and Randy Simonson but it was a pair of 47’s that did them in on the back nine.  Eddie Stephens took a 9 on the par five 8th and an 11 on the Par five 18th and still shot 86.

SNEAD FLIGHT:
Thomas Martinez posted an excellent round of 88 to win by 4 strokes over Mike Mudjer from the Chicago South Tour.  Both Mike Mudjer and Thomas Martinez were paired in the same group and aware of how each other were playing.  With only a 2 stroke difference headed to the back nine, Mike pared the 10th while Thomas bogied and Mike followed that up by birdying the 11th.   Mike took the lead after 13 holes but posting a 6 on the par 3 fourteenth hole put Thomas back out in front by two strokes with some tough finishing holes ahead.  Mike was unable to get things back on track after the triple bogey and shot 9 over on the back to fall out of first place to Thomas Martinez.
