Conditions were nearly perfect at Foxford Hills Golf Course and very little wind to deal with. Due to the hot weather and lack of rain, the greens were not cut to the speed they usually are. Despite the greens pace, the course was in excellent condition.
The format was a Modified Stableford Scoring System and the goal was to score points per hole having the most points at the end of 18 holes to win the flight. What makes the Stableford Format unique is low score does not mean a player would have the most points. The Jones and Snead Flights are good examples how unique the Modified Stableford system is producing the winner based on points, not the low score. A player is able to move on from a bad hole and know that there could be a birdie or par at the next to get them right back in the competition.
PALMER FLIGHT:
Jon Hasman returns to the winners circle shooting a 75 and scoring 36 points. Chuck Malik shot a 77 and Matt Bouman shot a 78 which both players finished one point back with a total of 35 points. Jon would have won in a stroke play tournament format but the Stableford gives players an opportunity to recover from a bad hole. Matt finished three strokes back but only one point back.
HOGAN FLIGHT:
The players in the Hogan Flight wished Doug Larsen had stayed on his fishing boat. Doug was a late entry and is a competition fisherman. Both Doug Larsen and Jim Polubinski at Chicago South Tour Members and looking at the scorecard the two were very close in how they played. Both players had 2 birdies and 11 Pars. Doug had one more bogey than Jim and they both had triple Bogey or higher which resulted in a minus 1 point. Jim had the lead going into the final holes but back to back triple bogies for a minus 2 points and a double bogey opened the door for Doug Larsen and a 6’ birdie putt moved Doug out in front to win. Doug was also a big money winner for the day with two closest to the pins for $140 and a skin for $19 and $110 in Golf Galaxy Gift Cards for a total winning of $269.
SARAZEN FLIGHT:
Mark Giebelhausen posted his lowest round of the year shooting 83 and scoring 27 points. Tim Schabb and John Mitchell both shot 86 but managed only 23 points to fall 4 points back of Mar. Was this the round that gets mark back on track to challenge the Merit Point leaders in the Senior Sarazen Flight? Welcome back to the winer’s circle Mark.
JONES FLIGHT:
The best example of the Stableford Scoring is seen in the Jones Flight. John Goldenne posted an 87 and in stroke play would have won the tournament. Ken Bobak and Lino Rojas both shot 90 but the difference was the 7 pars and one birdie that Ken shot that give him a 4 point lead and the win. At the conclusion of the tournament, Ken requested to move to the Sarazen Flight because he knows come August 1st, he would be moved because his Tour Index is now trending to a 15 handicap. I applaud Ken for making the decision early and it protects the points he will win as a Sarazen. John Carrato put up some strong points but a 95 meant too many zero points and lost in a scorecard playoff to John G. for position winnings.
SNEAD FLIGHT:
The field consisted of only 3 players but the scores were very close with David Small of the St. Louis Tour shooting a 112 for 16 points, Mike Kelly shooting a 114 for 11 points and John Kosnik shooting a 112 for 10 points. Again we see another example of the Stableford Format at work which is not about the score; it is about posting better numbers on holes.
