Friends - who would have thunk

Mike Caithamer (Chicago North Tour), John Downey (Chicago North/Milwaukee Tour Director)
 and Chris Johnson (Milwaukee Tour)

One of the most common responses golfer's make when joining the tour is to find others who have the same passion as they and make new friends.  Since 2003 I have seen strangers become close friends and travel to golfing destinations together.  It isn't just having someone who likes to play the game, it is about someone who has the same passion.

There is no better example of the friends made than Mike Caithamer (Chicago North Tour) and Chris Johnson (Milwaukee Tour).  Mike C. asked me to reach out to the member's of the Chicago North, South and Milwaukee tours in search of a roommate at Swan Lake Resort Major this past weekend.  Chris Johnson wasted no time in taking Mike up on his offer.

Often times you worry that personalities might clash, but this certainly was not the case.  It turned out that both have similar personalities and remind you of the characters in the movie "Dumb & Dumber."  Neither are dumb but they sure were fun to watch as the pair showcased their similarities when they both went shopping at the Swan Lake Pro Shop.

With shopping bags in hand, the two gave me warning regarding their attire for day two of the Major and requested a photo with me.  I think once you look at the picture, you will get an idea of the characters Mike and Chris are.  Seeing member's form new friendships like that of Chris and Mike is what the Golf Channel AM Tour is all about.

Prairie Landing hosts largest field on Chicago Tours

This week both the Chicago North and Chicago South Tours are joining forces; hosting a single event at Prairie Landing GC in West Chicago.  Last year 82 players participated and with one more player to confirm, we will reach 84 which is now the largest event held on the Chicago tour.  Players from St Louis, Wisconsin and Seattle are making the trip and will not regret their choice.

Prairie Landing is a links style golf course that requires precision shots off the tees with some holes that will let the “Big Dog Feast.”  The fairways are always in excellent shape and the greens are as fast.  Put your ball on the wrong spot on the green and you might need to tie an anchor to your ball to slow it down.  There is risk/reward for the aggressive player, but a big number is looming if too aggressive.

The first hole of the day sets the tone and is one of the toughest to start a tournament round.  There are those who go for the green but face having to re-tee if they fall to get their ball across the water.  Pull the tee shot slightly left of the edge of the water on the right and could end up in the water left and forward of the fairway.  No matter how you play number one, you still have to get your ball on the right area of the green or you will three or four putt.

One of the toughest par 4’s that a player will face is hole number 5.  A stream splits the fairway and if a player chooses to play down the right side, the stream butts up to the green.  If a player tries to carry the stream on the left, there is a huge hill with fescue and weeds as well as a stream to deal with.   Depending on where the pin is set, another large green that player’s will need to be cautious of.

The weather for Saturday looks promising and with any luck the winds won’t be too strong.  Seldom does Prairie Landing feature calm winds, which make the holes play even tougher.  There are five Par 3’s and five Par 5’s with the Par 3 twelfth the toughest of them all.  If the wind is strong, expect scores to be high.  No matter what, the players will appreciate the conditions and the great facility.  Prairie Landing has a country club feel with a couple practice holes, two putting greens, large range and a short game practice area at the back of the practice holes.

Prairie Landing is one of the top courses on either of the Chicago schedules and we are excited to be returning there again.  Good luck to all who are playing this Saturday.

Money Standings for Team Event

The Chicago North Tour has reached the mid-way point and already the race within flights is heating up.  Player's who are not participating in the Major at Swan Lake in Plymouth Indiana will have a weekend off to prepare for the final run of the season when things heat up starting with a big event at Prairie Landing where both the Chicago North and Chicago South Tours will play in a combined event.

The top two in money standings will be given the opportunity to represent the Chicago North Tour in the 2011 Chicago Ryder Cup against the Chicago South Tour.  The Team event will take place at Bowes Creek September 10th and will be 36 holes of Match Play Format.  Each 9 holes will be a different format testing the player's to work as a team.  The Chicago South Tour is seeking to bring the trophy to the South side because they believe had the weather and darkness not shortened the event, they would have eventually won.

Here are the current standings through the month of June:

Look who hoisted the trophy at GCI

The top story is the return to the winner's circle after two plus years of struggle.  Bruce Gallo has been a longtime member since the beginning when the tour first hit Chicago in 2003.  He has supported both Local, Major and National events and has struggled over the past few years with his game.  Bruce posted his lowest round on tour ever and on a very good course.

(Former Member Don McNanna having fun with Bruce)

Congratulations Bruce
welcome back to the Winner's Circle!

CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT:

Dane Yarnell held on to his 2 stroke lead to win by 2 strokes over Jim Hurckes.  Jim did make a run late, but a birdie on hole 16 by Dane assured him the victory.  Dane Yarnell and Mark Palmer are the leading player’s to beat in the Championship Flight.

PALMER FLIGHT:

Jim Apostol f the St. Louis Tour had a one stroke lead after nine over Jeff Kinney and Jack Dempsey.   Jack Dempsey soon dropped out of contention when he posted a 10 on the long par five eleventh hole.  Jim Apostol looked like he was on cruise control but shot 7 over on holes 12-14.  Jeff Kinney however had made the key shots to take the lead and through 15 holes he was 6 over par and a the leader by 6 shots.  Jeff has added another win for 2011.

HOGAN FLIGHT:

Don Sanford of the Milwaukee Tour has been having great success competing in Chicago North Tour events.  When Don finished the front 9, he had a one stroke lead over Mike Caithamer, DeRell Durr (Chicago South Tour), two stroke lead over Ron Hoxsey and a three stroke lead over Jim Polubinski (Chicago South Tour).  Jim Polubinski brought Don McNanna (former member) along as his caddie and when he bogied the 10th, it didn’t appear Jim would be a factor.  As the field began to struggle on holes 10-14, Jim Polubinski managed to shoot 3 over on the back while the field was posting doubles and triple bogie's.  Jim won by 3 strokes over Milwaukee Tour member, Don Sanford.

SARAZEN FLIGHT:

This was the strongest flight with 13 competitors which combined both Open and Senior Flight players.  John Flower’s was only 2 strokes back heading the back nine.  Holes 10 – 15 had enough challenge that could open the door to any charge a player could mount.  Bruce negotiated the three most difficult holes (11, 12 & 13) posting a par and after 13 holes, he was only 4 over par.  He did open the door when he began to stumble on the easier holes (14 & 15) shooting three over giving John Flowers an opening now being only one back.  It came to a quick end when john struggled on the Par 5 fifteenth posting a triple bogey and ending his chance at catching Bruce.  Bruce has been absent from the winner’s for over two years and it was great seeing this long time member hoist the trophy once again.

JONES FLIGHT:

It was a two man race between Charlie Dunkel and Randy Simonson who has been leading the Jones flight with wins.  When the pair completed their front nine, they were both 10 over par and well ahead of the 8 other competitors in the field.  Though Randy started to lose ground, there was still the tough 18th hole which had the potential for player’s to put up big numbers.  Randy was only 2 strokes back after 17 holes and when Charlie posted a double bogey on 18, it gave an opening to Randy who needed a par to tie.  Randy took an 8 to end his bid for another season victory.

Championship Flight (0-3.9):
73 - Dane Yarnell  ($80)

Palmer Flight:
78 – Jeff Kinney ($110)
82 – Jim Apostol (82)

Hogan Flight:
84 – Jim Polubinski ($100)
87 – Don Sanford ($20)

Sarazen Flight:
79 – Bruce Gallo ($135)
82 – John Flowers ($75)
86 – Robert Fredian ($35) won scorecard playoff for third
86 – Bill Neiert ($15)

Jones Flight:
88 – Charlie Dunkel ($120)
92 – Randy Simonson ($60)
95 – John Goldenne ($20)
