Results from Blackstone GC August 5th, 2012

Blackstone GC (Marengo, IL) is a hidden gem with the goal of being a private club.  The design gives competitor’s options to play smart or aggressive on several holes.  Greens roll to about a 10-11 and the closing two holes make for drama when trying to hold on to a small lead.  What a difference a day made because the day prior a severe storm tore through Aurora where the Chicago South Tour held an event and managed to complete on 9 holes in most of their flights.  The weather was perfect and there was even a thunderous shot on hole nine which is a rarity; double eagle.

Michael Roy of Las Vegas Tour visited family and friends while taking in the tournament at Blackstone.  The ninth hole played only 501 yards giving player’s an opportunity to reach the green in two.  There was a risk with a hazard to the right of the green but plenty of room to the left.  Michael hit his drive 293 yards leaving him a 208 yard shot to the green.  Linda Downey and Kim Downey were marshalling the pace for the day sitting at hole nine.

Michael hit an iron into the green as Linda and Kim watched it disappear in the hole.  From where they were they couldn’t tell for sure but as the group approached the green, to Michael’s surprise he found his ball at the bottom of the cup scoring a rare double Eagle.

Championship Flight: Jim O’Connor competed against Milwaukee Tour member Joe Thom in a head to head stroke play match.  Jim took an early lead after nine posting a 37 to lead by 6 strokes.  Joe was unable to crack into the lead Jim had built posting a matching back nine 40.

Palmer Flight:  Michael Roy made the trip to visit friends and relatives while taking in a tournament on the Chicago North Tour.  A double Eagle on hole number nine helped Mike post a even par 36 and a 3 stroke lead over Mike Anderson and four stroke lead over Raj Jayaraman and Jade Mosher.  Michael opened the door when he posted an 8 over par on the back but the rest of the field had equal trouble on the inward nine.  Michael went on to win by three strokes over jade Mosher and four over Mike Anderson.

Hogan Flight:  Dan Kwilas won the Hogan Flight but his outward nine had him five strokes back of Frank Kaldis.  The back proved to play the toughest and not many made big moves on the leaders.  Frank Kaldis posted a 12 over par 48 to shoot an 87 but it was Dan Kwilas who managed the tough back nine shooting a 41 to win by two strokes.

Sr. Hogan Flight: Tom Joy posted an 81 to win by one stroke over Bob Sherry who had the outward lead with a 39.  Craig Gallagher of the Hawaii Tour was in the mix two strokes back along with Tom and Mark Titone who was only three back.  It was Tom Joy posted a 40 on the back to Bob Sherry’s 43 to win by one.

Sarazen Flight: James Smith grabbed the nine who lead by one stroke over Bruce Gallo and there were a few other’s in striking distance.  Based on the results of other flights, the back nine gave competitors an opportunity to make a run at the lead.  Matt Jura turned in the low score on the back with a 42 but started the back four strokes behind James.  James held on to win a very close tournament.

Jones Flight:  Nomie Namie won by one stroke over Brian Kempf of St. Augustine Florida (soon to reside in Illinois).  Nomie and Brian took charge of the tournament early with third place posting a 52.  When the pair headed to the back nine Brain managed only to make up one stroke on Nomie who posted a 43.  Nomie recorded his fourth win and has been the strong Jones Player on the North Tour adding four 2^nd place finishes to his season total.

Snead Flight:  Leo Schnoor did something that is rarely done and that is winning three consecutive tournaments.  He will be going for his fourth consecutive and fifth win at the Chicago Championship this weekend.  Brian Kirschner had a 3 stroke lead over Robert Carneke and four stroke over Leo.  The low was 47 and the high was 53 in the six man field which meant the Snead Flight was up for the taking.  Once again the back nine proved difficult and even though Leo shot 48 on the back, it was enough to put him ahead of the field and win by one stroke over David Levanthal of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and North Tour Member Robert Carneke.

Chevy Chase Classic Results

Chevy Chase Classic (Wheeling, IL) designed as a country club in the 20’s with housing built for the member’s  and to be the country part to the Southside Olympia Fields CC on the Southside of Chicago.  Chevy Chase Golf Club is a traditional Midwest course with tree lined fairways that cross one another with a premium to find the fairway.  The player’s who keep the ball in play between the trees and away from the other trouble, will have a chance to post a good number.  It doesn’t take much to post a triple bogey on several holes if a player gets too aggressive.  The weather was perfect for golf and other than burnt out areas, the course was in great shape.

Palmer Flight:  Kirk Blakney is fresh off of his win at White Tail Ridge and waste no time by winning by one stroke over Jon Hasman.  This makes Kirk’s fourth win on tour and is the top Palmer player among all Chicago Player’s on both the North & South Tours.  Kirk Blakney and David Koth had the nine hole lead by one over Jon Hasman and three over Jim O’Connor.  David Koth had the lead when he reached the final four holes which are great closing holes.  David double bogied 15 and triple bogied the par three 16 to surrender the lead and finishing in par on the last two holes was not enough to hold off Jon or Kirk.  Jon Hasman tried to at least tie by birdying the 18^th hole but fell one shy of the lead. 

Hogan Flight:  Chuck Gleason has had a tough time playing this season but when he does he usually is in the hunt.  Chuck Wasted no time taking charge of the tournament reaching the 8^th hole at even par.  Eric Swanson was two strokes back as he made the turn to the back nine shooting a 40.  Eric took the lead on the 16^th hole by one stroke.  He surrendered the lead by triple bogeying the 17^th hole but closed with a Par to tie for the lead when Chuck double bogied 18.   Chuck went on to win the playoff on the second hole.

Sarazen Flight: Mark Giebelhasuen close the day as the Sarazen Flight Champion but called a DQ on himself when he discovered he signed for a wrong score on hole ten.  Since the score he signed for was lower than what he actually shot, Rule 6-6d was enforced and Mark contacted John Downey (Tour Director) to inform him of his error.  Eddie Stephens who had finished 2^nd with a score of 82 was crowned the Champion in the Sarazen Flight.  Eddie shot a 39 on the front nine due to a triple bogey on the 9^th hole.  John Goldenne made a charge but fell one shy of the lead.  Mark is to be commended for his honesty and integrity because had he not called the penalty on himself, no would have know different.

Jones Flight:  Jeremy Repp did not have the nine hole lead, that belonged to Phillip Sumang of Texas who shot a 39 one stroke better than Jeremy.  It was clear that the Jones Flight was a two man race which Jeremy took charge on the back shooting a 41.  Phillip fought hard but fell one stroke short of winning the tournament.  Holes 15 through 17 once again claimed a victim when Phillip went 6 over Par on those three holes.  He was down by two but fell one stroke shy even though Jeremy bogied the 18^th hole.

Snead Flight:  John Pacheco is the top Snead Player on the North Tour with three wins and four 2^nd place finishes.  The early lead belonged to Chicago South Tour Member Mike Kelly but John took charge of the tournament posting a 42 on the back.  Brian Kirschner once again put himself in position but was unable to match Jon’s back nine.  John will be promoted to the Jones Flight at the next Tournament Index update because his Tour Index is trending to a 19.1.   John is competing in his First Sr. National Championship and it will be in the Jones Flight.

Whisper Creek Open produces Low Scores with a Hole in One

Whisper Creek GC (Huntley, IL)  provided players with an excellent opportunity to score producing a few outstanding scores.  It has been awhile since anyone fired a hole in one and in over 10 tournament rounds played at Whisper creek, no one as aced any of the par threes; until Sunday.  Bob Sherry scored a “Hole in One” on the 160 yard Par 3 seventh hole.  The pin position was in a good position (up front to the right) which is tough enough to hold the green and get close.  While manage a three way playoff on hole fourteen just on the other side of the 17^th tee box, a roar bellowed across the course which we all knew something spectacular occurred.  The best part about Bob Sherry’s hole in one is it was witnessed by his wife and Son who followed the group throughout the day; it had to make the moment even sweeter to score the ace in front of his family member’s.

Tour Director John Downey set the course up longer than usual for the Jones/Snead’s and they handled the layout which was a little over 6,300 yards quite easily with only three scores in the 100’s.  The low round was turned in by multiple winner in the Palmer Flight; Kirk Blakney who shot 74 followed by Mike Caithamer (Hogan Flight) with a 76.  Congratulations to all the winners.

Palmer Flight:  Kirk Blakney wins by four strokes shooting a round of 74 and has been the hot Palmer Player of the year.  Chuck Malik shot a 38 on the front to match Kirk but turned on the after burners posting a 36 to go along with his front nine 38.  Ward Tatge was within one stroke after nine was not able to improve on his front nine shooting a 40 for a total score 79.

Hogan Flight:  Mike Caithamer joined the tour in 2010 as a Jones Player and has since then graduated to the Hogan Flight.  Excluding the easy layout at the Heartland Open at Swan Lake where he posted a pair of 83’s, his best round was an 85.  Mike fired his best round on tour ever shooting a 76 to win by three strokes.  Dan Kwilas and Frank Kaldis finished three back but Dan had the nine hole lead by two shooting a 37 on the inward nine.  Bob Sherry finished seven strokes back but his Ace on the Par 3 seventeenth hole was heard over several holes.

Sarazen Flight: Terry Witte joined the tour June 28^th, 2012.  He finished 2^nd in his first event at Prairie Landing, 11^th at Bridges of Poplar Creek and fired his best round (83) so far to win by three strokes.  Terry took an early lead by 3 strokes over Jorge Arteta who had a rough go on the back to fall 5 strokes back.  Joe Coffey made the turn five strokes back and made a run but managed only to close the gap by two strokes.

Sr. Sarazen Flight:  Mark Geibelhausen has worked hard to put himself in position to qualify for National’s and found himself in a three way playoff with Eddie Stephens and Steve Downey all who posted a round of 85.  Eddie Stephens has been in more playoffs than most members of either Chicago Tours and was hoping this would be his first Tie breaker win.  Both Eddie and Steve put themselves in a tough spot missing the green and having to pitch to an elevated green.  Mark Giebelhausne was u against the collar of the rough with no easy putt.  Both Eddie and Steve bodied the hole and waited as Mark rolled in his three foot tester to win the playoff.

Jones Flight:  George Torres won for the second time this season shooting a round of 85 to beat Mike Argyrakis by one stroke.  Mike had the early lead by two but faltered shooting a 44 on the back.  George posted a 5 over 41 on the back to win the Jones Flight.

Snead Flight:  Leo Schnoor made the turn 6 strokes back shooting a 49 to John Pacheco’s 43.  Brian Kirschner wasn’t too far off the mark posting a front nine 46 but it was Leo who got hot shooting a 43 to win by two strokes.  John Pacheco was still 3 strokes ahead going into the closing three holes.  Leo held on shooting 5 over on the closing holes while John Pacheco had a tough go posting nine over par on the closing holes.

2012 Chicago North Team Standings

The following chart shows the Gift Card Money earned on the local tour.  The top two will make the Chicago North Team and compete August 26, 2012 against the Chicago South Tour.  With only 4 tournaments remaining on the Chicago North schedule, there is time for many to make run.

Where there is only one player listed in a flight, the Tour Director will select a player to pair with that player.  The team will consist of 24 Player's to represent the Chicago North.  Those who make the Team get 36 holes of golf, shirt and lunch at no cost.  The event was funded by the member's and 50/50 Raffle.  Good Luck!
